“Border-Listening/Escucha-Liminal” #3
We are glad to open a new call to welcome texts for our book series Border-Listening/Escucha-Liminal. We’ll accept full papers and advanced drafts from the 1st of July until December 15th (new deadline), 2022.
The publication aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to contest hegemonic discourses on sound and listening practices while embracing new ways of knowing and being-in-the-world. We welcome contributions from different lines of research, such as academic articles, artistic research, inter/trans–disciplinary approaches, testimonio and experimental formats.
The focus of our publication will expand this year from Latin America to engage with all global south and non-Western perspectives.
For authors from the global north: we prioritize texts from the global south over about the global south, especially if it is not problematized how the author is situated in relation to the topic.
Please note that our publication especially appreciates proposals with strong political and ecological commitments; nevertheless, all submissions must have a clear focus on sound or music, which must be central in the text and not merely ornamental.
All selected contributions will take part in the printed publication, which will also be available online for free. We will make a small print run to cover printing and proofreading costs and pay a symbolic fee to the authors (yet to be defined). All contributors will also receive a copy of the issue by postal mail. The authors retain the right to republish their text in other publications in the future, noting that it was edited first in our edition.
We are looking for works that reflect the following topics:
• Intersectional, feminist, queer, decolonial approaches to listening
• Sound activism and epistemic disobedience
• Discourses and practices of listening in the global south
• Indigenous ontologies
• Non-western knowledge and practices
• Problematizing or subverting the role of technology
HOW TO SUBMIT
Interested contributors should submit a full article (between 2500-3500 words, including footnotes), accompanied by a short biographical note, and contact information, up to 10 keywords, in a Microsoft Word document to info@contingentsounds.com. We also accept well-advanced drafts (with at least 2000 words).
Please follow our style guide for submissions.
All articles will undergo an initial review, and authors will be notified if the work is suitable for publication.
